A file in Microsoft Excel is referred as Workbook. To create a new workbook, normally you will be provided a way to do so. For example, clicking on the File menu and clicking on New. In Microsoft Excel 2010, you have to do the same to create a new workbook. Microsoft Excel also provides you more options for creation of a new workbook. It’s your choice to decide which one to create. The options are:
1. Creating a blank workbook.
2. Create a workbook based on a template.
3. Create a workbook based on an existing workbook.
1. Creating a blank workbook
a. Click File Menu and click New.
b. In the right section, under Blank workbook, click Create.
That’s it; you have created a blank workbook. By default, three worksheets (Sheet1, Sheet2, and Sheet3) appear in the workbook.
2. Create a workbook based on a template
In this option of creating a new workbook, you will be provided some templates. You have to customize these templates to suit your needs. These templates are provided with Microsoft Excel or can be downloaded from the Microsoft web site.
To select a template that is available in Microsoft Excel, do the following:
a. Click File Menu and click New.
b. Under Available Templates, click Sample templates and then click on the template that suits you.
c. From the right pane, click Create.
(If you had already opened or downloaded templates then you may click on the Recent templates or My templates)
To select a template from the Microsoft web site, do the following:
a. Click File Menu and click New.
b. Under Office.com Templates, click on the template that you need.
c. Click Download from the right pane.
3. Create a workbook based on an existing workbook
This way of creating the workbook is similar to creating a workbook based on a template except that you use a workbook that you already created instead of a template. Perform the following steps to create a workbook based on an existing workbook:
a. Click File Menu and click New.
b. Under Available Templates, click New from existing.
c. Browse to the location, click the workbook and then click Create New.
